Wellness coach and plant-based chef Rajiv Harry is the founder of Plant Bomb. Rajiv started cooking as a young kid, inspired by his father who shared his love of Trinidad and its flavorful cuisine. It reflects a fusion of African (mainly West African), Creole, Indian-South Asian, Chinese, Amerindian, Arab, European, and Latin American-Spanish-Portuguese cuisines. John Caleb Pendleton is the founder of the unique floral and wood design business Planks and Pistils. Originally from Alabama, John lives in Chicago, where many consider him Chicago’s first “guerrilla florist” as he is known for placing lavish floral arrangements at the base of African American Monuments. Rooted in his father’s passion for woodworking and his mother’s for gardening, John has cultivated a business that began designing flowers for his wife in their home. Now Planks & Pistils is a floral and wood design studio focused on “human flourishing, Blackness, and progressive storytelling.” His Planks & Pistils shop supports next-day floral delivery to Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods. Blk Girls Green House is a Black-woman owned open-air plant & specialty home goods shop founded by Oakland-based Kalkidan Gebreyohannes and J’Maica Roxanne. BGGH is spreading its roots throughout the community by offering a space where people can connect with nature, culture, and each other. J’Maica and Kalu have been nurturing over 90 plants at home between themselves and over 200-plus plants at Blk Girls Green House. BGGH has recently been featured in recent articles by Essence, Forbes, Domino, and 7x7, to mention a few. They are committed to collaborating with fellow Black-owned businesses, entertainers, and creators to create the ultimate urban destination to connect to nature and refill “hearts and spirits,” says Gebreyohannes. Maurice Harris is the Los Angeles-based artist best known as the visionary behind Bloom & Plume, a bespoke floral design studio located in Echo Park. Maurice's unique point of view, sense of humor, craftsmanship, and dedication to his community have made him one of the most sought-after floral designers in Los Angeles. Focusing on his community, Maurice opened his café located between Echo Park and Downtown LA. As the first-generation Canadian of Jamaican descent, Karla Smith-Brown has always been connected to her Caribbean heritage. In 2018 she visited Saint Elizabeth Parish in her family’s homeland. There she immersed herself in the “vibrant energy, bountiful land, and nurturing spirit of the parish.” This experience inspired her to find a way to capture the essence of this experience when she returned to her home in Brooklyn, New York. Karla founded OLIVEE Floral, an artistic floral design studio that honors her family’s heritage. Mignon Hemsley and Danuelle Doswell co-founded the D.C.-based plant shop Grounded Plants to bridge the gap between owning a business and creating a place for physical and mental well-being. Their digital and physical houseplant businesses are designed to boost their customer's creativity, reduce stress and purify their environments.
